Progress North Carolina Statement on Vote of NC House to Gerrymander NC Judicial Districts

“This judicial gerrymandering is just the latest attack in the state legislature’s ongoing war on democracy in North Carolina,” said Progress North Carolina executive director Gerrick Brenner. “The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed that the legislature has already unconstitutionally racially gerrymandered their own districts by jamming as many African-American voters as possible into as few districts as possible. State lawmakers have passed radical voting restrictions that were also thrown out by the courts. Now state lawmakers are moving to further politicize the courts themselves and weaken the independence of the third branch of government important to a functioning democracy.”
